Life In Hawaii

There is only one crater-lake in Hawai`i. Green Lake occupies part of the floor of Kapoho Crater. This cone in lower Puna was formed by magma, erupting through groundwater 300-350 years ago. The lake developed soon thereafter; it was known to Hawaiians as Ka Wai a Pele, according to Ellis' 1823 account.

Carlsmith Beach Park AKA 4 miles is one of the nicer beaches in the Hilo area. This side of the Big Island is mainly made up of lava rocks, but Carlsmith Beach Park has a sandy ocean bottom.

There is no sandy beach, but it’s a great place for swimming and snorkeling because the nearshore waters are protected by a reef. The entire area consists of several relatively large lagoons. Freshwater bubbles up from the bottom in several areas, so there are some cooler spots throughout the lagoons.

Sea turtles can often times be seen here. They are tame and don’t seem to mind the people in the water. They sometimes even swim up to snorkelers instead of away from them. The beach park has a spacious grassy area with trees, so there is plenty of room for a picnic.

About 2 miles upstream from Rainbow Falls is a spot aptly named Boiling Pots. During the rainy season, which can be anytime, the river churns through a succession of "pots," resembling a steaming Jacuzzi. Some of the river water flows beneath a level of old lava, then suddenly bubbles up as if it were boiling.

About Waiopae Tidepools

The physical characteristics of Waiopae Tidepools are similar to a barrier reef. A shallow basalt ridge on the seaward side of the tide pools causes waves to break. However, the pools still get excellent water circulation by northeast tradewind-generated swells that help support abundant coral and fish life.

There is rich coral growth in the tidepools with high diversity. Also, the tidepools support an unusually high abundance of juvenile fishes, which makes the area an important nursery for fishes.

The tidepools are easily accessible and can be entered under most weather conditions except major storms. The nearshore bottom is pahoehoe lava with coral growth increasing as you swim farther out. Snorkelers will find excellent viewing in the inner and middle tidepools, with visibility decreasing seaward into the surf. The MLCD's maximum depth is about 4 meters and is not recommended for SCUBA. Kayaking is discouraged to avoid breaking coral in shallow water.

Panaʻewa Rainforest Zoo

Panaʻewa Rainforest Zoo is located in Hilo, Hawaiʻi, United States. This small 12-acre (4.9 ha) zoo is the only one in the United States located in a rainforest. It is operated by Hawaii County and receives its funding from the county and from private donations. [[Image: |thumb|]] The Zoo has more than 60 species of animals on display, and the grounds feature more than 40 different species of plants, flowers, and trees. The most popular attraction of the Zoo is a male white Bengal Tiger named Namaste' (named after the traditional namaste greeting). Bengal tigers come from India and have been hunted to the brink of extinction, with fewer than 2000 live in the wild. White tigers have not been seen in the wild in over five decades, and the current captive population descend from a number of inbred individuals. Namaste' was born in Las Vegas on September 30, 1998, and arrived in Hilo on April 16, 1999. The Zoo had planned to purchase Namaste' from Dirk Arthur, a magician at the Tropicana Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, but when Arthur saw the Zoo's 1-acre (4,000 m2) tiger enclosure, he donated Namaste' to the Zoo.
